USA is no more a beacon of human rights. A report highlights gross abuse of human rights in USA.

USA embroiled in allegations of religious bigotry, racial discrimination and election fraud.

Centre for Democracy, Pluralism and Human Rights, has come out with a startling report on human rights violations in United States of America. According to this report, in recent years, free speech rights and freedom of the press have been eroded and Internet  controls have been institutionalized. Voices are suppressed on social media, the academia,  as well as the print and broadcast media, and are forced to speak in one voice that matches  the opinion of the USA government officials, and as per the new policies to control the  internet, which have been put in place by intelligence officials, and masqueraded as  policies to advance the free-speech rights of the common people. In general, any opinion  that is not part of the approved ‘liberal’ discourse or the approved ‘conservative’ discourse  is branded as an ‘extremist’ position, and people with independent positions are hounded  out of the public space.

Following are the other shocking highlights of the Report:

1. RACIAL DISCRIMINATION: RACISM IS DEEPLY ENTRENCHED IN THE SYSTEM

Structural Racism Built into the State Constitution Some of the provisions in the State  Constitution are racist and continue to date, like the Three-Fifths Clause which  violates the principle of equality, and the Fugitive Slave Clause which did not permit  people to escape slavery.

Three-Fifths Clause (Native Indians, not to be numbered equally but three-fourths)

“Representations and direct taxes shall be apportioned among the several States  which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers,  which shall be adding to the whole Number of free Persons, including those bound to  Service for a term of years, and excluding Indians not taxed, three-fifths of all other  persons.”

The 3rd Clause of the 4th Article of the USA Constitution authorizes the enslavers to seize  enslaved people:

“No person held to Service or Labour in one State, under the Laws thereof, escaping into  another, shall, in Consequence of any Law or Regulation therein, be discharged from such  Service or Labour, but shall be delivered up on Claim of the Party to whom such Service or  Labour may be due.”

The Constitutions of California and New York states too have racist provisions, which are meant to deny housing and disfranchise Native Americans respectively.

Systemic Issues: Racism and Corruption in the Legal System and Judiciary

The law enforcement agencies, legal system, and the judiciary have all built up a reputation for corruption and racism.

In particular, a harsh law passed in 1994 was designed to ensure that Blacks would face a  cruel justice system and long prison terms which would, in turn, benefit the owners of private prisons. Blacks are given more severe punishment by judges for the same crimes.

The composition of the judiciary is racist in nature. Most of the positions are filled by Whites and fewer Blacks, Asians, and Native Americans in proportion to their population. Even  Clerkships are not offered to Blacks easily. However, Blacks lead in the number of wrongful convictions.

Racism is Institutionalized in Political Parties

Both the parties have been hypocritical in their conviction to end racism and none of them framed a comprehensive policy to eradicate it. Leaders of both parties have made racist remarks at multiple occasions, venting out their ingrained racism.

Is tiktok destroying Indian culture?

When being liberal becomes illiberal.

This was my answer to the question: “Is tik tok destroying Indian culture?”

What is the culture?

If 9 people out of 10 do something stupid, then stupidness is the culture. Banning this or that is talibani attitude.

Why watch tiktok or install it at all. I haven’t watched it’s full advertisement on you tube even once. If you are watching it to the last, then you like it and it is your culture.

Problem is hypocrisy. You are moved by whatever is out there and having no control over your self, yet with an holier than thou attitude demand banning this or that.

No two human beings have equal taste or mind. May be some people enjoy prurient content. So be it. Why judge other people?

Having said that, I would like to disable it’s forced advertisement on me. If banning is bad so is forcing it through advertisement.

As regards the culture, please note that the zeal to maintain it led to 800 years of servitude of India as a nation. Those in power, thought they could impose culture with the help of barbarians. A contradiction of terms.

Why it has been collapsed by Quora?

It doesn’t matter. What is interesting is advocating free speech is against Quora policy. So being liberal is not being liberal. It is a strange time in which champagne socialist run social media and help muzzle free speech talking anything even remotely Chinese.

Though I had missed one point in above answer. Graphic depiction of violence and promotion of criminal act on tik tok is abetment of offence and is against the laws of India. It moderators do not bar such content from tik tok, it has to be banned for promoting crime.

Notionpress called nicely.

Publication and education:

A large number of publishers whom I have met were not from literary background. They were book dealers who graduated to publication on the basis of their marketing skills. Historically also the books selling shops were the earliest copyright owners and who approached the Royal Court for a charter on Copyright. Authors’ rights developed rather were acknowledged, much later.

Notionpress and free speech:

Today I received a phone call from Notionpress requesting me to remove the review posted here. The young lady was polite but extremely disappointed when I ended the conversation after explaining that they should concentrate on fixing their services rather than to rely upon the nice manners alone.  Continue reading

Free speech and TV Media Bigotry

The power of the TV:

TV Media is a powerful medium. It’s power lies in moving people to form an opinion without giving all facts or giving just rudimentary facts. Print media does not have this privilege. In the guise of breaking news TV news and say anything and get away with it.

What is bigotry?

This is the definition of bigotry:

“stubborn and complete intolerance of any creed, belief, or opinion that differs from one’s own.”

If a breaking news is devoid of facts or complete falsehood or if news channel telecast a religious or criminal bigot’s untested views or worse threats like a loudspeaker, would that be fair?

Show cause notice to NDTV & other TV channels:

Women’s day 2015 and free speech right of rapist.

Ideas, principles and ideology makes a great breakfast or cocktail snacks but serve poor for dinner. To quote from a Hollywood movie Transformer : ‘the problem with every cause is that in the end cause betrays you.’ Here we are at the crossroads where multiple causes have been betrayed. A mob of people lynched an alleged rapist in Dimapur in North East India. Police involvement is suspected. But that is not the subject. Free speech of journalist in an emotive issue is the subject.
Today is Women’s Day. Congratulations to all. At the same time let us find time to celebrate ‘Human Day’ sometime and try to be completely human on that day.
Many things have happened recently.
