western-digital-blue-cavier-hard-diskWestern Digital is considered to be the pioneer Hard Disk manufacturer. It is generally attributed to new technologies in the field of data storage media. Its hard disks were earlier not easily available in India. It appears,  2008 recession pushed it to explore Indian market which was hereto before saw the monopoly of Seagate, another manufacturer of Hard Disks. The truth is that perception is not reality. I also bought Western Digital hard disks, due to the perception that as innovator, it would be of good quality. But it is real pain at inappropriate places. All hard disks break down frequently. Alternative to Libre Office or Microsoft Word in Linux.

Kingsoft-screenshotFinally a near alternative of Microsoft Office /Libre/Open etc. is available in Kingsoft Office which is available for all Debian based Distros like Ubuntu 13.04/12.10/12.04/Linux Mint 15/14/13. I have successfully installed it. It is also available in RPM package for Fedora and the like distros. The screen shot is on the left.

Alternative to Unity in Ubuntu Raring 13.04: Mate.

Screenshot-Mate-13.04Unity sucks as usual. Ubuntu Raring Ringtail 13.04 does not work properly on older machines (e.g. AMD core 2 with 2GB ram and on-board graphics) any more. It installs alright but xWindow crashes. Ubuntu-Gnome also had the same problem. In such situation Xbuntu (Ubuntu with Xfce) is a better option and we can add ‘Mate’ as Desktop environment to make it even better. Mate is the new name for the classic Gnome 2.0 Desktop. Until 10.04 Ubuntu was shipped with Gnome 2.0 Desktop.

It was my graduation year from High School or something and I was advised to take up side classes in computer programming. That was so long ago that DOS (Disk Operating System) was not born as yet. It is said that love is at first sight. But I prefer Hindu version of incarnation, according to which the Union of marriage takes place after many incarnations and (Union) can be repeated in many lives.
