Income tax raids on Anurag Kashyap, Tapsee Pannu and others.

The Secret of making profit from flop movies:

Anurag Kashyap is a mediocre movie director whose last and only successful movie is remembered for the choicest expletives he inserted in it. The actress Tapsee Pannu is no different. She is relatively new comer and not a blockbuster by any standards. Yet both have their networth multiplied exponentially. For past three days incometax department is questioning them for sources of their income.

The Midas Touch of Wealth without SUCCESS.

The Income Tax Department had been monitoring these two for a long time. Their ever rising wealth has become a reason for raids especially the fact that it happened while their movies were constantly flopping. Two producers Vikas Bahl and Madhu Mantena have also similar track record. The IT department is searching the magical wand by which these people generate wealth.

Anurag Kashyap

Anurag Kashyap has been working in the film industry for almost 23 years. In the year 1998, he started his career as a story writer with the film ‘Satya’. After this, he became a director from the 1999 film ‘Last Train to Mahakali’ and a producer from the 2010 film Udaan.

In just 23 years, Kashyap has acquired assets worth about 806 crores. His films continued to flop, but the property has been growing faster rate at which his movies flopped.

His films ‘Raman Raghav 2.0’, ‘Ugly’, ‘Lootera’, ‘Bombay Velvet’, ‘Manmargiyaan’ etc. have been super flop. The film ‘Manmargiyaan’ did business of 25 crores, ‘Mukkabaaz’ went for 10 crores, ‘Raman Raghav’ had a business of 6.80 crores, while the movie ‘Bombay Velvet’ was a disaster. So how did he make his money? Moreover why is he in the business in a highly competitive industry?

Those from India must have guessed the answer. But Income Tax has to find out evidence if he was acting as conduit for somebody like ‘D’ company across the border.

Tapsee Pannu

Now let’s talk about Taapsee Pannu. She entered the industry in 2010 with the Telugu film Jhummandi Nadam. After working in the Telugu film industry for nearly three years, Taapsee made her Bollywood debut in the year 2013 with the film ‘Chashme-Baddur’. After this, she has worked in about 11 films including ‘Baby’, ‘Badla’, ‘Sand ki Aankh’, ‘Mission Mangal’ , ‘Manmargiyaan’ and ‘Thappad’. She is working in upcoming films like Dilruba, ‘Loop Lapeta’, ‘Rashmi Rocket’ and ‘Shabash Mithu’. Taapsee charges 1 to 2 crores for a movie. Her net worth is said to be around Rs 44 crore.

In such a situation, looking at the ratio of actress’s earnings and assets, there is a mystery surrounding her earnings as well. Her Box office performance has been lack lustre at best. Yet she got to work wuth Big B rather early in carreer.

The film ‘Thappad’, released in February last year, earned 29 crores and ‘Sand ki aankh’ earned 23 crores. A film ‘Dil Junglee’ had earned only 1.25 billion rupees. While movies like Mission Mangal, Pink and Badla earned well, but the credit goes to other galaxy of actors of those movies.

The other magicians:

In 2010, Anurag Kashyap, Vikramaditya Motwane, Madhu Mantena and Vikas Bahl jointly launched a company, Phantom Films. But in 2018, it was closed down after Vikas Bahl was accused of sexual exploitation. Last month, Madhu Mantena bought 37.5% shares of the company. He already owned 12.5% shares. The remaining 50% shares are with Reliance Entertainment. With the purchase of the company’s stock, Madhu Mantena had announced to make a film on Ramayana in a budget of 500 crores and Draupadi (Mahabharata) in 200 crores.

This announcement came on top of the fact that his last 5 films made in his production have been super flop. The film ‘Bhavesh Joshi: Superhero’ collected only 1.45 crores, ‘Mukkabaaz’ collected 1.63 crores and ‘Trapped’ collected 2.85 crores. Along with this, the collection of films ‘Ran’, ‘Liar Hi Sahi’, ‘Rakhtcharitra’ also did not cross 8 to 9 crores.

Now just think, what is the magic taking place between the flop films, the losses that are constantly being made and the company closing, through which crores of crores are being made. In such a situation, it is not right to project that income tax enquiry is happening due to political reasons.

Bigger question is are these people involves in operation DALDA. Read more about it by searching or clicking on the said topic.

My guess is that all this un accountable wealth is a sure sign of ill-gotten benami property which is small cut of being part of money laundering operation these people were running. Very soon Enforcement Directorate would step in to seize all this ill-gotten wealth.
