After 59 Chinese app ban let China Talk Talk.

China wants War with India. (Part 3)

The military level talks between India and China are apparently not making any progress as China does not want to step back to its original position and restore status quo ante. It has even put up huge 80 meter banner proclaiming that it owns the land encroached. These lands remains accessible during summer that is till November and Prime Minister of India has already hinted that lock down like position may continue till that time.

Talk talk war war.

Talk talk war war policy of China in which war continues but it wants business to go on so that it’s financial position is un affected.

The interesting point is that it is India which is escalating the ladder on commercial front. Two weeks back it was ordered that at Chennai port all imports from China shall be permitted after physical verification. It was a big jolt. All imports from China are wrongly classified to save import duty. Goods A are sent but goods B are declared to save custom duty. Last week this order was extended to all ports. Now all goods from China have to be physically verified before entry.

A day before yesterday 59 Chinese mobile apps have been banned on the grounds of threat to sovereignty and national interest. This means even if the ban is challenged in court, judicial review will be very limited. As far as economic impact, look at the valuation of one app tiktok.

Tik tok is boom.

Tiktok has a valuation of 100 billion USD Revenue of 17 Billion dollars and profit of 3 Billion dollors.

Out of 2 billion global downloads 611 million are in India out of these 400 million in 2019 alone. About 5.5 billion hours were spent by Indians on tiktok alone.

Not to mention the fact that China was so touchy that ensured removal of all talks about it on social media. My answer advocating against it’s ban was also removed by Quora a few days ago.

No one sanctions or slaps a super power.

The worst effect of all these restrictions is is about the status of China in in global perspective. China want to pose itself as a global superpower and look at its standing in neighborhood. First Indian soldiers killed and injured so many of Chinese soldiers that it is shying away to give numbers. The second slap was that it is now rightly treated as a rogue country whose custom declaration cannot be trusted at all all and therefore shall be physically verified at each port and in each package.

The third slap has far worse consequences. The ban on Chinese mobile applications is a signal to all future developers to be selective in choosing the country of origin in its application if they want to target the market in India. China is country non grata.

The way things are moving, India China relations entered a point of no return. While everyone may not agree with the decision to ban apps but most people are asking why it was not done earlier. The reason is self explanatory in the chronology as given above that India was trying to escalate the matter in a gradual manner. But now that it has been done, it would be difficult for China to have same cordial relations either with India or with Prime Minister Modi whom it chose to treat like Nehru. A wrong assumption.

Whatever may be the outcome, the reputation of China being a superpower who could do anything it wanted is tarnished to the tatters. Look how USA has followed up by banning Huawei. Similar pressure will be built up in Europe and the politicians who are on payroll of China would have to act to show solidarity with public sentiment.

Actually the economic truth is not the rise of China but the fall of USA and EU economically in past few decades. That is another story which needs to be told at another time.
