In view of the protests in Bahrain, the government has advised its nationals to consider sending their money home instead of parking it there. There are 4,000,00 Indian nationals out of a total of 1.04 million residents in Bahrain. The message was conveyed to the representatives of the various Indian associations in the Gulf nation during their meeting with Indian ambassador to Bahrain Mohan Kumar recently.Considering that many Indians have lost their money in strife-hit Libya, external affairs minister SM Krishna had told the envoy to advise the Indian nationals on this issue.
“It’s an evolving situation though of late there in no flare-up. But it’s better to be safe. So the advice was given for their consideration,” explained a government official.Out of the 4,000,00 Indians in Bahrain, many of them fall in the “semi-skilled workers” category. And most of the Indians in the Gulf kingdom hail from south Indian states with Kerala leading the pack followed by states like Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
In Libya, India has had 18,000 Indian nations and as of now 12,000 have been pulled out. But as the violence spread many of them had to leave the place being unable to take out their money. Indian mission had issued a general advisory to its national there, urging them to avoid crowded places and cut out all non-essential movements within the city.
